I showed up all ready to facilitate the discussion of today's book, Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar."
Unfortunately, there had been a miscommunication. The library thought today's book was supposed to be "Cry, the Beloved Country." We're actually scheduled to read that one in November. Consequently, they took down all of my "incorrect" posters listing "The Bell Jar" as this month's book and put up new ones with the books through October (the other books listed for the rest of the months are in fact correct). They also told anyone who called and asked that this month's book was Paton'.
There's a little problem with that. I've never read "Cry, the Beloved Country." Consequently, I had to figure out how to do this on the fly. Only three people actually showed up, though, so we basically did a current events/historical treatment of mental illness (one was a nurse)/women pulled in different directions by society situation while we ate smores bars that were still warm. It was a nice, intelligent discussion, at any rate, and as the director and half the librarians have been replaced since our last meeting, I'll chalk this up to chaos of a new regime. Oy.
