I never know whether to say the current year of the year they came out. Anyway, here they are, in the rather weird order from the Oscar website. I think I've seen... one? Also, I was pulling for Weird Al, darn it.

And the nominees are... )

If I've got this right, there are 54 films nominated.
The number in front is how many times it's nominated )

As usual, bold means I've see it. Thanks, Batman!

*Note: 24 of these are currently not streaming anywhere. Another 8 require rental or purchase to view. That leaves only 22 films, 1 of which I've already seen.

ETA: Some of the short films are available for free on Youtube: The Flying Sailor, Ice Merchants, Night Ride, Haulout, and Stranger at the Gate.

I wound up recording the second half of the Oscars last night because I was sleepy. I was not expecting to wake up to what happened. That was deeply disturbing.

I've actually seen enough of these this year to have an opinion!

And the Oscar goes to... )

Overall: Great films did come out this year, but the problem is the Academy has gotten a little too esoteric with some of these movies, and it's almost become a badge of pride that they snub anything that was popular. This has led to multiple years of people no longer caring about the Oscars anymore because a lot of the films aren't available for everyone to see. Streaming has changed that somewhat, but some of these were still nigh impossible to find, like all the live action shorts except The Long Goodbye. And a few of the nominees were, honestly, terrible. Affair of the Art and The Hand of God, I'm looking at you.

Well, here we go

ETA: Going through and underlining the winners. I wound up seeing 19 of the 23 winners (missing 3 with CODA and 1 with Belfast)

Considering I saw nothing last year, I can't very well do worse )

I saw 1 with 3 nominations. Okay.
Now 3 for a total of 16 nominations. 2-20
Up to 4 with 18 nominations 2-21
And 5 with 22 nomination 2-23

So, 10 with 34 nominations 2-27
Now 11 with 40 nomination 3-4
Got 12 with 41 nominations 3-6
Up to 13 with 43 nominations 3-10
Whew, 14 with 53 nominations 3-11, and I've now seen at least 1 in every category.
16 with 55 nominations, plus all songs, 3-13
17 with 56 nomination, plus songs 3-18
18 with 60 nominations, plus songs 3-19
19 with 61 nominations, plus songs 3-20
20 with 62 nominations, plus songs 3-21
21 with 64 nominations, plus songs 3-22
22 with 67 nominations, plus songs 3-23
23 with 73 nominations, plus songs 3-24
25 with 75 nominations, plus songs 3-25

I didn't wind up watching the vast majority of the nominated movies this year, there's no host, and my interest is pretty darn low after all the weird stuff the Academy has been doing to the show.

I do hope Glenn Close finally gets her Oscar though.
bookishwench: (DruSpike theme match)
I miss Billy Crystal's montages. Anyway, for the heck of it, I'm listing all the best pic winners (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo and bolding the ones I've seen. There are some significant holes in here. (ETA most recent)

And the Oscar goes to... )

So, 42 43 of them. I'm actually more surprised at the break up in the 1950s than anything else, really.

Also, as far as my guesses on who will win: Argo, Steven Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jessica Chastain, Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Hathaway, Brave, and costume design to Les Mis.

I attempted going to the library yesterday to get Midnight in Paris. Possibly Tree of Life. Maybe Beginners.

All were out. Not only out, Beginners had 7 person wait list, Tree of Life had 25, but the real winner was Midnigh in Paris with a grand total of 70 people on the wait list. At a week each, that's way over a year.

Only today did I remember that iTunes rents movies. D'oh!
