Very interesting analysis. Thanks for writing it. You make some very interesting points. But the most mind boggling part to me was the Kennedy Fanfic Archive. I had to see it to believe it!
I'm down with the Kennedy dislike, mostly for the reasons of her being, like you mentioned, so completely opposite of Tara. Like any lesbian will do, no standards or preferences apply.
That bugged me. If you loved someone like Tara, how could you go to someone like Kennedy?
Plus, I just found her obnoxious.
As for the Buffy/Riley relationship I think it was purely a chemistry thing for me. He and Buffy would be kissing and it would seem like they were trying to back away from each other. They didn't seem to enjoy it and it was extremely uncomfortable to watch. I liked Riley as a character just not paired with Buffy. The episode Where the Wild Things are just really drove the nail in the coffin. Anya and Spike on the couch had more sexual chemistry in 30 seconds, fully dressed, without touching, than Buffy and Riley had naked in bed for the whole episode! And Buffy chasing down Riley's helicopter to beg him to stay was demeaning to her and all of us who identified with her. Way more demeaning than balconey sex in my opinion.
Andrew I usually liked. I thought his character was funny, and he had a crush on Spike so I could identify with him. His whole "like Gandalf rising from the....more beautiful than ever..." just cracked me up!
However, his being in a place of responsiblity and trust was a misuse of the character. He was a murderer, and conspired against Buffy for a year. I didn't buy the sudden turn around. Use him yeah, I found him funny, but don't make him suddenly a saint. And the two Italian girls was just stupid. For the reasons you mentioned.
Again, really enjoyed your writing, as well as reading all the comments. Kudos.
