Hopefully I have a couple in here that are new to people. There are really some wonderful fics this year.
Sugarspun Ball - by Valancy - Nutcracker and Mouse King - Anyone who's read Hoffman's original story of Nutcracker is going to love this fic that takes place just before the king goes off to the land of humans. It focuses on one of his sisters, and it has all the little details of the original story that made it so generally delightful.
The First Conversation with Death - by Evilhippo - Sandman - Rich, evocative language used to describe what Morpheus experienced after Death came for him in red. I just really liked this one because it felt like Sandman's character very well.
A Woman's Heart - by Kinky_Kneazle - Titanic - This isn't about Rose or Jack at all. It centers on Rose's maid, who we barely see in the movie but who becomes a full-fledged character in this along with Mr. Murdoch. This is a great alternate POV piece.
Leaves that Are Green - by Dormouseintea - Louis Vuitton commercial - I saw this one on the under-reviewed list and wondered what the heck this commercial could be about... then I looked up the commercials on Youtube and, well, still wondered what the commercials are about (though I think I now ship Louis Vuitton/Nameless Japanese Girl). This is a great little fic that really somehow manages to catch the flavor of the original source and is interesting to read. Also, I had a talking Big Bird alarm clock as a kid, and this made me nostalgic for it.
Back to the Garden - by Caliette, Hazel - The Secret Garden - Straight up Mary/Dickon once they're grown up, and this deals with some of the very real class problems they would have to face if they did become engaged, but somehow I wound up believing that they were going to be just fine... as they should be.
Start with the First Step - by Vennefic - Mulan - This takes place after the events of the movie and is actually quite bleak, but at the same time Fa Mulan remains herself, with all that means, in a society that is essentially frightened of what would happen to itself if women suddenly started thinking they could be warriors. It's a great fic.
Concentrated Other - by Eustacia Vye - Sandman/Firefly - I've had River play with Drusilla in the past, but Delirium is a perfect match for her. This is a wonderfully creepy yet strangely hopeful story, and it really deserves a read by anyone who's a fan of either, or especially both, fandoms.
Field Study - by Mardy - Shaun the Sheep - I am an unabashed fan of Shaun the Sheep. This little ficlet captures a lot of the fun of the animation and is very funny. Also, it has plenty of Bitzy, and there's no bad in that at all.
