It really should have been an obvious solution, but it took a five-year-old to notice it.

“Luisa, I asked the donkeys to stay in their pen so that you don’t have to chase them around and carry them home anymore,” Antonio said.

“That’s great!” Luisa said.

“But they said no.”

“What? Why?” she said, feeling betrayed that the donkeys weren’t willing to make things easier for her even with Antonio explaining everything.

“They say they like you, and the only time they get to see you is when you have to pick them up and bring them back home because you’re always so busy,” Antonio said.

Luisa’s jaw dropped, but she couldn’t help feeling happy that the donkeys really did like her.

“Okay, how about if I promise to have lunch in the barn with them twice a week if they don’t escape all the time?”

“I’ll go ask!” Antonio said, running towards the barn.

Five minutes later he came back, grinning.

“They say okay as long as they can still have dance parties with you and you’ll pick them up and snuggle them sometimes,” Antonio said. “Deal?”

Luisa laughed.

“Okay, little cousin, you tell them they’ve got a deal!”
